Josip Broz Tito, leader of communist Yugoslavia, refused to submit to Soviet control after World War II. Unlike Eastern Europe’s other communist governments, Yugoslavia had liberated itself largely without the Red Army. Tito owed Stalin nothing — and he made that clear.

Stalin responded the only way he knew how.

Throughout the late 1940s, the Soviet Union sent assassins, spies, and saboteurs to eliminate Tito. Poisoned gifts. Infiltrated agents. Planned ambushes.
Every attempt failed.

Finally, Tito sent a message back to Moscow — not diplomatic, not coded, but terrifyingly direct:

“Stop sending people to kill me. If you don’t, I’ll send one to Moscow, and I won’t have to send a second.”

The assassination attempts stopped.

Stalin, a man responsible for millions of deaths, backed down. Yugoslavia became the only communist state in Europe independent of Soviet domination, charting its own path between East and West and later helping found the Non-Aligned Movement.

It was one of the rare moments in 20th-century history when someone stared down Stalin — and lived.
