My thoughts on the 1991 Nissan 240sx with a 2.4L inline 4 cylinder engine and 5 speed manual gearbox:
This was not my first time driving a 240, and especially not my first time being around one. The world loves the 240, and I understand why. But before I get into that, let’s talk about the 240 as a car, since the one I drove was the closest to a stock 240 I’ll ever get.
The 240 is an enthusiast’s car, without a doubt. With its buzzy little four cylinder, manual transmissions, and rear wheel drive setup it’s a fun ride, but not fast. The 240 is not a fast car. It seems as though iconic cars always get wrapped up in the idea that they must be fast, but it simply isn’t true. But let’s talk about the real reason everyone loves the 240: How you can build it.
The 240 is a canvas of a vehicle. You can throw any engine in it, change any body panel, or modify any other part and it will still be a great car. Rotaries, V8’s, and SRs will all fit under the hood, and that’s what people do. It seems to me like every time I talk to a 240 owner, after asking what body style they have I have to ask “What engine are you running?”. Sometimes I get “Oh, just the stock KA for now” but a lot of the time I get “Well, I think a 2J would be cool” or “Small block chevy”. That’s what makes the 240 so good. It can be whatever your heart desires.
