In the late 1970s, during the waning days of Anastasio Somoza's presidency in Nicaragua, the beleaguered general fled his presidential residence to militarized barracks in Managua. The Carter administration, in a final effort to persuade Somoza to leave the country, sent then-Mayor of Miami, Maurice A. Ferré, to negotiate.
Carlos M. Ferré, son of Maurice A. Ferre, relives his father's heroic experience from his own perspective, demonstrating how the politics of Central and South America are intimately connected to the present realities of Miami.
This piece is a part of an ongoing series for the FIU Maurice A. Ferré Institute of Civic Leadership and is produced by Aaron Glickman and Meme Ferré.
