In this sixth video of the chess fundamentals series, FM Elliott Liu explains you the chess terms check and checkmate. The piece involved in both terms is the king. Check appears when the king is directly attacked by an opponent's piece. The opponent whose king is in check can defend a check in three ways. The options are escaping from the check by moving the king to a safe square, interposing or to block the check by moving another piece between the attacking piece and the king and the final option is to capture the piece that is delivering the check. Checkmate describes the situation when the king is put into check but none of the mentioned defending methods can be applied. The game is over if checkmate occurs on the board.
