A full day of rainbows, dramatic light, and classic Eryri (Snowdonia) scenery
Today’s adventure took me from Capel Curig up to the summit of Moel Siabod, one of Eryri’s most rewarding standalone mountains — and it turned into a day filled with rainbows arching over the valleys, lakes, and ridges. The ever-changing light made this one of the most atmospheric days I’ve had in the mountains.
Starting from Capel Curig, the route winds past lakes, marshland, and open hillside before steepening on the final push up the main path via the forest and open plateau. From the top, the views were unreal — Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa, the Glyderau, Tryfan, and the rugged interior of Eryri all lined up under shifting colours and rain showers.
🏔 History of Moel Siabod (Moel Siâbod)
Meaning of the name:
Moel Siabod roughly translates to “Shapely Hill” or *“Bare Hill of the Shapely Form.”
Location & prominence:
Standing at 872m, Moel Siabod dominates the landscape above Capel Curig. Because it stands alone, the summit offers what many call “one of the best viewpoints in Snowdonia.”
Geological significance:
The mountain is made of ancient igneous rock, shaped by volcanic activity and glaciation. Its rugged crags and boulder fields are remnants of Eryri’s dramatic geological past.
Historical use:
The area around Capel Curig was historically used for:
Slate quarrying and mining
Sheep farming
Old drovers’ routes linking valleys
Evidence of these industries still exists in the form of old buildings, quarries, and tracks.
Famous ridge – Daear Ddu:
The Daear Ddu Ridge is one of Eryri’s finest grade 1 scrambles. Traditionally used by guides and climbers to train movement over rock, it’s a classic route to the summit.
