In Zoshigaya, Tokyo, there is a quiet street lined with large zelkova trees leading to Kishimojin Temple.
More than a century ago, this very street was depicted in an Edo-period ukiyo-e print.
In this video, I walk through the same place and touch one of the trees that still stands today.
It is a moment where the past and present of Japan meet.
As I stand beside the tree, I also try to read the spirit of the land — what in Japan might be called the presence of the local earth spirit.
Through this walk, I hope to share not only the history of the place, but also the quiet atmosphere that has continued from the Edo period until today.
