10 Unhinged '80s Movies That Slipped Through the Ratings Loophole

I found ten films from the early 1980s that were rated PG and shown to children who had absolutely no idea what they were about to see. Before 1984, the gap between a kid's movie and an adult film was essentially nothing — and studios used that gap aggressively. Poltergeist got its R-rating appealed by Spielberg personally, then traumatized a generation with a face-tearing sequence and real human skeletons in a swimming pool. Dragonslayer was a Disney co-production where dragon hatchlings nibbled a severed leg — and the backlash was so severe it created Touchstone Pictures. Return to Oz opened with a nine-year-old strapped to a gurney for electroshock therapy. I'm breaking down every film that slipped through that pre-PG-13 window, what the ratings board actually allowed, and why an entire generation is still processing these movies today.
