Myrtos has a long history: nearby are the archaeological sites of Fournou Korifi (around 2600 BC) and Pyrgos (around 2000 BC), both important Minoan settlements. During World War II, the village suffered heavy destruction by German occupation forces – a monument in the center commemorates these events.

Today, Myrtos is a destination for gentle tourism, especially appealing to hikers, peace-seekers, and independent travelers.
