Battle of the Crater is the result of a Union plan to tunnel beneath Confederate strongholds and blow up the Confederate defenses. 8,000 pounds of black powder were packed into the back of the mine. At approximately 4:45AM on the morning of July 30th 1864, the mine was detonated, creating a gigantic crater of approximately 170 ft X 80ft and approx. 30ft deep. The chaos and the fighting that ensued became known as The Battle of the Crater. See the previous video for more information on how the mineshaft was built and came to be.
The Battle of the Crater is known as one of the most horrific fighting scenes of the entire Civil War. Colored soldiers fighting for the Union were beat to death with blunt objects when the Confederates launched their Counter attack. Confederate General William Mahone was successful in rallying his men and eventually seized back what ground was lost during the explosion. The objective of the mineshaft is remembered as being the biggest success that ended as a failure. Thanks for watching.
