(17 Mar 2015) The Philippine government denied on Tuesday that four Filipino nurses had been kidnapped from a hospital in Libya by an Islamic State group affiliate.
Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman, Charles Jose, told reporters at a news conference in Manila that the Philippines Embassy in Tripoli had been in touch with one of the four nurses who said they were all safe.
An official of a militia battling the Islamic State affiliate reported the kidnapping in the city of Sirte on Monday.
Jose said, however, that the nurses "were actually taken from their accommodation to a safer place" by a friend.
The Libyan militia official who belongs to the 166 Battalion, which is battling the Islamic State affiliate, told The Associated Press that the kidnapping took place in the afternoon from Sirte's main hospital, called Ibn Sina.
He added that his battalion helped evacuate the remaining foreign medical crew in the hospital to the city of Misrata, where the battalion is based.
The Philippines, one of the world's largest labour exporters, has banned the deployment of workers to Libya due to the escalating violence.
But about 4,000 Filipino workers and dependents have remained in the strife-torn country despite a government offer to repatriate them, Jose said.
