The Israeli military said it was carrying out a fresh wave of strikes on Tehran, a week into the war that has shaken West Asia. Video footage showed Iran’s Mehrabad Airport on fire following the attacks. Gulf countries also reported intercepting retaliatory strikes, with Saudi Arabia and Dubai saying their defences shot down incoming attacks on Saturday morning. Meanwhile, US Central Command said American forces had struck more than 3,000 targets inside Iran since the US–Israeli joint assault began last weekend. US President Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric on Friday, saying there would be no deal with Iran until an “unconditional surrender".
United States President Donald Trump says the US has begun “major combat operations” in Iran after Israel said it had launched missile attacks against the country.
Multiple explosions have been heard in Iran’s capital, Tehran, while blasts have also been reported in several other locations across the country. There was no immediate official Iranian reaction.
Israel’s military said it had protectively sounded air raid sirens in areas across the country “to prepare the public for the possibility of missiles being launched toward Israel” in retaliation.
Trump: We are going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry to the ground. We are going to annihilate their navy.
We are going to ensure that the region’s ‘terrorist’ proxies can no longer destabilise the region or the world.
We will ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon. It is a very simple message. They will never have a nuclear weapon.CThis regime will soon learn that no one should challenge the strength and might of the United States Armed Forces. Iran’s Tasnim news agency has reported that Iranian news websites, including the Iranian state news agency IRNA, are facing cyber attacks. So far, IRNA’s telegram account is still functioning but its website remains inaccessible.
In the past hour, Israel has carried out a series of air strikes targeting a number of areas, particularly in the Iqlim al-Tuffah region of Lebanon.
In a statement, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the operation was aimed at neutralising threats posed by Iran. “The State of Israel launched a pre-emptive attack against Iran to remove threats to the State of Israel,” he said.
