La decadenza delle strutture dell’antico Impero Romano e poi la sua fine, nel settembre del 476 per quanto riguarda l’Occidente e invece nel 1453 a carico dell’Impero d’Oriente, ha sempre colpito l’immaginario collettivo. Si tratta di un sentimento che ha iniziato a diffondersi in modo più complesso e meditato soltanto con l’Età Moderna. In questa conferenza illustreremo l’evoluzione delle idee e delle indagini storiche a riguardo di ciò che rimane, almeno per l’Europa e il Bacino del Mediterraneo, il fatto storico più importante a partire dall’Antichità Classica. L’Europa, come noi la conosciamo, è nata da queste vicissitudini e cercare di comprenderne le dinamiche permette di rendersi conto con maggiore consapevolezza anche delle diversità del Presente.

The decadence of the structures of the ancient Roman Empire and then its end, in September 476 as far as the West is concerned and instead in 1453 for the Eastern Empire, has always struck the collective imagination. It is a sentiment that only began to spread in a more complex and thoughtful way with the Modern Age. In this lecture we will illustrate the evolution of ideas and historical investigations concerning what remains, at least for Europe and the Mediterranean Basin, the most important historical fact since Classical Antiquity. Europe, as we know it, was born out of these vicissitudes, and trying to understand its dynamics allows us to become more aware also of the diversity of the Present.
