Ingredients
Oats - 1 Bowl
Clarified Butter / ghee - 2 Teaspoon
Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
Black Gram / Urad dal - 1 teaspoon
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Asafoetida / Hing- 1/2 teaspoon
Green chilli - 1 small chopped
Onion - 1 small chopped
Peas - 1/2 cup ( optional)
Turmeric - a pinch
Water - 1 and a half Bowl ( extra 1/2 bowl, if need be )
Coriander leaves - 1 Teaspoon
Lime juice - 1 lime
Instructions
Heat clarified butter/ ghee in a pan and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
Once it splutters, add black gram/ urad dal and curry leaves.
Now add asafoetida/ hing and saute for a minute and add green chillies.
Next, add onions and give it a nice mix and cover for a minute. Add already boiled (frozen peas )and give it a good mix
Add salt, turmeric and asafoetida.
In a separate pan, roast the oats for 2-3 minutes.
Now add the roasted oats to the onions and peas and mix it for a minute till everything combines.
Add hot water ( 1 and half bowl ) or add normal water of same quantity.
Cover and let it cook for 2-3 minutes. And adjust the consistency of upma by adding more water, if need be.
Finally add coriander leaves and add a dash of lime juice for that extra tangy flavour.

Lightly spiced and tempered with onions and peas, this dish is healthy and tasty at the same time. Quite a quick recipe to make, this one is not just limited for breakfast, but can also be had when you are in a mood for a light lunch/ brunch. You can add as many veggies as you can, to make it even more healthy.

Tips and suggestions by Chef-
Boil water beforehand, so as to make it in a jiffy
Use the same bowl for measuring water as well as oats.
You can use chana dal, urad dal( black gram) too, in the tempering for enhanced taste.
Peas are optional, here we have used frozen peas that are boiled in water for 3-4 minutes. Skip peas, if you want.
Oats that we have used here are normal oats that are easily available in the market.
Add veggies as per your taste and liking.
