Wilson Pickett recorded more than 50 songs that made the US R&B charts, many of which crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100. Among his best-known hits are "In the Midnight Hour" (which he co-wrote), "Land of 1000 Dances", "634-5789 (Soulsville, U.S.A.)", "Mustang Sally", "Funky Broadway", "Engine No. 9", and "Don't Knock My Love".
Pickett was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991, in recognition of his impact on songwriting and recording.
He performed at the North Sea Jazz festival on 15 July, 1995 with this memorable concert.

Wilson Pickett (Prattville (Alabama), March 18, 1941 - Reston, January 19, 2006) was an American soul singer. He started his career as a member of the group The Falcons. He had his biggest hit in the United States in 1965 with In the Midnight Hour. After that he had success with songs like Mustang Sally and Fire and Water, his last hit (in the United States) from 1972. After 1972, American hits stopped coming and Pickett fell on hard times. He spent several years in prison, partly because he was driving drunk and hit an elderly man, who was seriously injured. He had fewer hits in Europe. In the Midnight Hour was a hit in 1976 in the cover version by Bryan Ferry on his EP The Price of Love. Nevertheless, Pickett was not forgotten in Europe either: in 1991 the feature film The Commitments was released, about a white Irish soul band that played Pickett songs. Pickett performed several times in the Netherlands, including in 1995, as part of the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. The NOS reported on that performance on TV. Pickett was inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 1999. He died in 2006 at the age of 64 from a heart attack in Reston, Virginia.
