The "Filter Bubble" concept is the idea that algorithms run by social media companies, which try to guess what you’re interested in, and personalise your feed, are gathered from a limited set of data; your search history, clicks, device & location to name a few.
As a result, the topics that reach you are limited to a bubble of only your own defined interests and search topics.
Eli Pariser, who coined the term, warned that these algorithms are able to close us off to new ideas, subjects and important information.
Another word for the phenomenon is an “Echo Chamber” - in essence; information, ideas and beliefs are being repeatedly pushed to you in a closed system, which can extend not only to your newsfeed but your mind and social circle.
It’s not to say that personalised information engines are a bad thing. They help us edit out massive amounts of data provided online to cater to what’s important to us. But it's probably a good idea to be aware of what might be happening behind the scenes.
