This march was composed in 1956 while Kelly was serving as bandmaster of the Royal Sussex Regiment in Korea. The title refers to a city in the Netherlands where one of the greatest military gambles of World War II occurred. Using 1,068 airplanes and 478 gliders, the plan was to drop 20,000 Allied troops into the occupied country during the night of September 16-17, 1944, and open a corridor for the British Second Army to advance on the ground from Belgium into the heart of the Netherlands. With German forces greatly underestimated, the plan never had a chance of success. Total casualties were over 17,000 with some of the bloodiest fighting occurring at Arnhem, where paratroopers attempted to capture a bridge over the Rhine. Kelly, who had been wounded six weeks earlier, was in a British hospital during the disaster -- his regiment, however, suffered heavy casualties trying to reach the beleaguered paratroopers.
Brass band Backum Brass is led by Max Knappstein and is part of Muziekvereniging Emergo from Castricum in the Netherlands.
