The Parthian Empire, lasting from 247 BC to 224 AD, was a formidable Iranian dynasty that rose from the steppes of Central Asia to dominate the ancient Near East. Centered in Persia with its capital at Ctesiphon, the Parthians built a vast empire that stretched from the Euphrates to India, acting as both rivals and trading partners to Rome. Known for their skilled horse archers and devastating cavalry, they perfected the famous “Parthian shot,” a deadly tactic of feigned retreat followed by sudden counterattack. Their position along the Silk Road made them wealthy middlemen of trade, while their fusion of Hellenistic and Persian traditions created a distinctive culture. For centuries they checked Roman expansion in the east, most famously crushing Crassus at Carrhae in 53 BC. Eventually, internal struggles and rising pressure from the Sassanids ended their reign, but the Parthians left a legacy of resilience, warfare, and cultural exchange at the crossroads of empires.
