The footwork of Daoist Taiyi Taijiquan is one of the most essential elements in mastering the art of Taijiquan. Taijiquan emphasizes “the body leading the hands, the steps carrying the force,” and footwork serves as the bridge that unites upper and lower, internal and external. The transition of weight from bow stance to horse stance may appear simple, yet it embodies the principle of yin and yang in mutual transformation. In the bow stance, one leg forward and the other back, the weight is firmly rooted, symbolizing the solid quality of yang; in the horse stance, both legs share balance, shifting between substantial and insubstantial, expressing the blending of yin and yang. Through this seemingly ordinary shifting, one can perceive the rhythm of qi and blood circulation, resonating with the breathing rhythm of heaven and earth.
The shift from empty stance to crouching stance, marked by the circular motion of the rotating leg, highlights the round and flowing essence of Taijiquan. The leg tracing a circle in movement both stretches the sinews and smooths the meridians, while gathering and guiding qi into unity. The empty stance is light and agile, while the crouching stance is firm and rooted—one rises high, the other sinks low, representing both ascension and descent, a vivid reflection of “movement within stillness, stillness within movement.”
During walking transitions, the coordination of arms with steps forms a unified whole of inside and outside. The hands turn with the steps, the steps follow the body, like the rotation of the stars—endless and ceaseless. Each step is not an isolated act, but rather in harmony with breath, intention, and the circulation of qi. The variations of weight, pace, opening, and closing all conceal within them the profound meaning of yin and yang exchange.
Thus, the footwork of Daoist Taiyi Taijiquan is more than physical training; it is cultivation of the mind in resonance with the Dao and the cosmos. Through continual practice of advancing and retreating, shifting and circling, practitioners gradually enter a state where “the body follows the mind, and the mind follows the Dao,” truly experiencing the wondrous mystery of Taijiquan’s celestial transformations.
