Once a Brahman lived in a small village. He used to earn his living by performing religious rituals at People's House. One day a rich merchant gave him a goat for his services. The Brahman was very happy to get the reward. He happily put the goat over his shoulder and walked towards his home. On the way, three crooks saw the Brahman carrying the goat. They devised a plan to cheat the Brahman and take away the goat. They took different hiding positions at three different places on the way of the Brahman. As the Brahman reached a lonely place, one of the crooks came out of the hiding place and asked the Brahman in a shocking manner. Dear Brahman, I don't understand why a man like you is carrying a dog in his shoulder. The Brahman was astonished. He screamed, Can't you see it's not a dog but a goat? The crook replied, Please don't be angry, All I can see on your shoulder is a dog. The Brahman was annoyed but carried on with his journey.
The Brahman had barely walked a distance, when another crook came out of his hiding place, and asked the Brahman, You seem to be a wise man, Why are you carrying a dead calf on your shoulders? The Brahman yelled, How can you mistake a living goat for a dead calf? The second crook replied, I just told you what I saw. The Brahman got confused, but continued to walk further. After a little while, Brahman met the third crook. He asked laughingly, Why are you carrying a donkey on your shoulder? It can walk on its own. Hearing these words, the Brahman got scared. He started thinking, Is it a goat or some kind of ghost, which is changing the form all the while? The Brahman threw the goat on the roadside and ran away. The three crooks laughed at the foolish Brahman. They got the goat and were happy to feast on it.
