In Part 19 of our Gilgit-Baltistan motorcycle adventure series, we begin the final leg of our return journey, riding from the breathtaking Hunza Valley back to Gilgit City. After conquering mountain passes, icy nights, and legendary landscapes, this daytime ride allows us to truly absorb the beauty we raced through earlier.

Golden autumn leaves glow under the sun, green pine forests stand tall against rugged Karakoram mountains, and winding valley roads guide us home. The contrast of colors, light, and shadows makes this ride feel almost cinematic — a perfect closing chapter to an unforgettable northern expedition.

Riding the Yamaha R1 through these valleys felt powerful yet peaceful, while my companion followed on the Power Sultan 250cc, both of us reflecting on the miles traveled and memories made. The road through Hunza tests focus and restraint, where temptation meets maturity on every curve.

As the mountains slowly fade behind us, we finally roll into Gilgit City, ready to rest, relax, and reflect. This isn’t the end — it’s a pause before the next adventure begins.

Hunza Valley

Hunza Valley is located in the Gilgit District of Gilgit-Baltistan, surrounded by some of the world’s most dramatic peaks. Historically, Hunza was a princely state controlling trade along the ancient Silk Route, making it strategically and culturally significant for centuries. Known today for its peaceful lifestyle, terraced fields, and breathtaking mountain scenery, Hunza is especially magical during autumn when deciduous trees turn golden and orange while evergreen pines remain lush green. The valley’s winding roads and elevation changes make it both a rider’s dream and a serious technical challenge.

The roads cutting through Hunza Valley follow natural contours shaped by glaciers and tectonic movement. These routes are narrow, curvy, and carved into steep mountainsides, offering unmatched views but demanding full concentration. During autumn, falling leaves, changing temperatures, and rough patches add to the challenge, turning every kilometer into a balance between enjoyment and discipline.

Gilgit City is the administrative and cultural heart of Gilgit-Baltistan, situated at the confluence of historic trade routes. For centuries, Gilgit served as a key junction connecting Central Asia, China, and South Asia. Today, it acts as the main gateway to northern Pakistan and a vital hub for travelers, adventurers, and riders heading toward Hunza, Skardu, and beyond. Nestled between towering mountains and the Gilgit River, the city provides a moment of rest and reflection after long journeys through the Karakoram.

Autumn is one of the most visually striking seasons in Gilgit-Baltistan. The brief transition before winter paints valleys in warm tones, creating a rare window where nature feels calm yet alive. Daytime rides during this season reveal landscapes that are often missed during night or stormy rides — making this return journey a perfect visual finale.
