This program originated in Fürstenberg an der Havel, a small picturesque town on the shores of the same lake as Ravensbrück, the women’s concentration camp, well known for its horror and terror.
Every year, concluding the memorial ceremony, single flowers are sunk into the bottom of the lake, where the victims’ ashes were thrown.
As I was conceiving the music for this concert of prayers written or composed by Jewish women, I could nearly hear the women’s voices calling from the bottom of that lake.
