The Indo-Russian joint venture, established in Korwa, Uttar Pradesh, has successfully delivered 27,000 AK-203 assault rifles to the Indian Army, with an additional 8,000 rifles set to be handed over in the next two weeks. Despite initial delays, the delivery is now on track, marking a significant milestone in the defense deal signed in July 2021.

Under the contract worth over ₹5,000 crore, more than 6.1 lakh AK-203 rifles are to be manufactured in India, with technology transfer from Russia. The joint venture, Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), aims to achieve 70% indigenisation, with full-scale production expected within 2-3 years.

The Indian Army's efforts to replace indigenous INSAS rifles with modern ones have led to the induction of 66,400 SIG-716 assault rifles, alongside the recent procurement of AK-203 rifles. This move addresses the Army's need for advanced assault rifles and strengthens its capabilities in counter-terrorism operations.
