From the Joe McMurrey Collection
Offered with documentation that includes a comprehensive history in the Shelby Registry and the original invoice and owner’s manual, this 1967 Shelby Cobra 427 from the Joe McMurrey Collection is arguably one of the finest of its kind in the world. Serial number CSX3295 was factory finished in white acrylic with a black leather interior and sold new from J.D. Ball Ford in Miami, Florida, to Coconut Grove resident Howard Rothberg. After two years of careful ownership, Rothberg sold the car to New York racer and sports car dealer Bob Grossman, who sold it to Warren Southwell of Harrison, New York. Richard Cohen of Little Rock, Arkansas, then owned it from 1980 to 1985, when he sold the car at 19,000 miles to Gene Chaney of Missouri. Chaney rebuilt the Cobra, adding black side pipes, a roll bar and quick jacks and replacing the original Sunburst wheels with 7.5- and 9.5-inch Halibrands. The car remained in Chaney’s garage for the next 22 years. Still wearing its original paint, the Cobra was offered for sale online in 2007 when Joe McMurrey purchased it for his superb Shelby-themed collection. In 2008, Joe had the car completely dismantled and the body stripped to bare metal by Sanderson’s of Dallas. Close inspection revealed the original numbered parts in place, all stamped with the car’s 3295 serial number. “Practically everything was original on the car,” Joe noted in a recent interview, “so I just had it painted it again in the original Wimbledon White.” For that task, Steve Sanderson recommended the services of renowned Gainesville, Texas, Ferrari expert Bob Smith of Bob Smith Coachworks, who lent his expertise in preparing and painting the aluminum body and finishing the chrome. McMurrey has kept the Cobra immaculately prepared, and it now shows just over 20,000 miles. He enthusiastically describes it as one of the finest of the 427 breed, emphasizing the solid originality that he credits for its excellent overall performance and drivability. High originality, magnificent presentation and ample documentation make this one of the most desirable Cobras offered in recent years, an assessment with which any enthusiast will wholeheartedly agree.
