Resources Minister Keith Pitt says the Australian government has prioritised discussions with PNG diplomats over a Chinese fishing agreement.
The $200 million agreement would allow China to set up a multipurpose fishery and industrial park in a PNG city just 200 kilometres from Australia.
“We’ve made this a priority in terms of engaging with Papua New Guinea to get a very clear picture and understanding of what that agreement might or might not be,” he told Sky News host Chris Smith.
Mr Pitt also said the area that China wants to use for fishing is covered by Torres Strait Island treaties with PNG and he expects those to be “respected” and border force will be observing.
“It is an area in the Torres Strait where border force are active, they’re engaged up there on a regular basis. We are looking closely at fish doc management throughout those treaty areas.”
