In this edition of I Too Can Do, we sit down with Tyrone Marhguy — a Ghanaian engineering student at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn Engineering) whose journey began under extraordinary circumstances, including a period when his family lived on a parked bus. Rather than defining him by hardship, the conversation explored how those early experiences shaped a first-principles mindset that now drives his work in processor architecture, from building an 8-bit ALU with thousands of discrete transistors to designing real silicon.
We discuss semiconductor engineering, the importance of mathematics, Africa’s role in the global tech ecosystem, and why the continent must move from consuming technology to building it.
If you are a student, engineer, policymaker, or young African thinking about the future of technology, This discussion challenges young Africans to move beyond consuming technology and instead commit to building the foundational systems that will define the continent’s future.
