This animation introduces the Digital Activities and Feelings Inventory (DAFI), a new research tool that looks beyond how long young people spend online to focus on what they do and how it makes them feel. The research shows that the quality of online experiences, including activities like social comparison and risky interactions, is more closely linked to mental health than screen time alone.
Rather than counting hours, the findings highlight the importance of understanding the thoughts and feelings young people have about themselves after being online, and how these psychological reactions can shape wellbeing.
This work invites a shift in how we talk about digital technology use, placing greater emphasis on the emotional and psychological impact of online experiences.
