Moengo is a small town in the east of Suriname. No more than 50 years ago it was the supplier of the main income source of the country. Bauxite, a raw material was mined and sold worldwide for aluminum production. In those days Moengo was rich, many American and Dutch expats lived here and there were plenty jobs and side activities.
But in the 80ties the Interior War of Suriname ruined houses, infrastructures and many people were killed. The American bauxite company, together with its employees left the region.
Most people in Moengo nowadays are Maroons, a population group descending from fugitive slaves that lived in the forests around Moengo for centuries. Their ancestors survived a traumatic escape in a strange country and more recently they survived a traumatic War, in which their population group played a key role. Yet, the Moengonese still feel passionate about their small town. "There are good times and there are bad times", and now is the time to start looking for the good times again. This documentary shows the people who live in Moengo nowadays, how did they survive their history and how do they get a grip on their daily lives?
