Retromulator – Great Synth Bundle or Open-Source Controversy?

Описание: In this video we take a look at Retromulator by discoDSP, a new plugin that bundles several classic synthesizer emulations into a single instrument.

Many of the synth engines included in Retromulator originate from The Usual Suspects, a long-running open-source project that recreated a number of famous hardware synths such as the Access Virus A, B and C, The Virus TI, Microwave XT, Nord Lead 2X, Roland JP-8000.
Retromulator packages these engines together and adds a unified interface, preset management and additional features — including a DX7-style FM synth.

However, the release has also sparked some debate in the synth community, mainly because the plugin is still open source (you can still download it for free) but also offered for $29 (apparently to support discoDSP development), even though the underlying engines are derived from open-source projects.

Legally this is perfectly allowed under many open-source licenses, but it raises interesting questions about the spirit of open-source collaboration versus commercial redistribution.
For example:
• Does the new project add meaningful features or value compared to the original one?
• Does it contribute back to the original project in some way?
• Does it improve the software — fixing bugs, improving performance, or expanding functionality?

In this video we’ll:

• explore what Retromulator actually includes
• listen to some sounds and presets
• briefly discuss the open-source controversy surrounding the release

My goal here is not to take sides, but simply to look at the plugin and talk about the discussion happening around it.
