Historic preservation professionals assembled by Champlin | EOP are actively working to examine and evaluate the inner structure of the nearly 200-year-old Old State Capitol in historic downtown Frankfort, Kentucky. A partial ceiling collapse in the House Chamber required KHS to move quickly to ensure the building received the necessary care. Initial assessments revealed moisture-related damage in the upper chambers.
A team of architects and engineers worked to open a masonry access point, that had been closed off in the past, in hope of observing the structure of the rotunda and dome. Further investigation will be needed to determine the conditions of structural and finish materials, the causes of the visible deterioration, and the proposed repair procedures.
Like any treasured historic structure, the Old State Capitol requires ongoing attention to ensure its stability and longevity. KHS is proactively planning additional restoration and preventative projects to protect this National Historic Landmark and preserve its legacy for generations to come.
