This video shows the International Marimba Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Clair Musser, in a live performance. This event took place in Paris on May 6, 1935 at the Salle Rameau in Paris, which was a prominent Parisian concert hall.
This vintage footage, unfortunately, contained no original audio content. I have therefore added a soundtrack, using a 1933 audio recording of Musser conducting 35 marimbists in a performance of "Bolero" by Eustasio Rosales. This work was also performed by the International Marimba Symphony Orchestra in their 1935 performances, and may be the piece actually depicted here.
Although the International Marimba Symphony Orchestra included 100 members, the complete ensemble was too large to fit into the Salle Rameau. Therefore, the group shown here is considerably smaller. Included in the front row are three marimbists who would go on to solo careers as marimba performers. From left to right they are: Jack Connor, James Dutton, and Burton Jackson.
