Baylor Trustee Dr. Rob Headrick ’82, a thoracic surgeon at CHI Memorial Chest and Lung Cancer Center, organized an event for students to paint and sign white ribbons to promote lung cancer awareness.
Students in Baylor’s anatomy, biomedical, molecular methods, and honors biology classes followed a lung cancer diagnosis from discovery to treatment in a special event in the Weeks Science Building organized by Headrick, Baylor events coordinator Leslie Davenport, and Science Department Chair Elizabeth Boaz Burnette ’99.
Interactive demonstrations included a tour of CHI Memorial’s ‘Breathe Easy’ Mobile Lung CT coach to learn about this important screening tool, learning about the artificial intelligence (AI) technology that helps physicians see and diagnose lung cancer, step into the role of a surgeon as they simulate a lung biopsy using the Ion robotic bronchoscope, and view a pathology sample of a lung cancer biopsy through a microscope.
“These students are future scientists and engineers,” said Headrick. “We hope to encourage them to look into the future and develop new technology that will be used in new, creative ways to change the future of healthcare.”
PICTURED ARE CHRIS DRAFT, FORMER NFL PLAYER AND BOARD MEMBER OF THE WHITE RIBBON PROJECT, WHICH PROMOTES LUNG CANCER AWARENESS; STUDENTS ADDI YATES, CHARLIE SILBERMAN, HEATH TECHASIRIWAN, AND BRENLEY GENTRY; AND DR. ROB HEADRICK '82.
