Many German prisoners found their living conditions better than they'd had in cold water flats back home. They ate American military rations including special meals for Thanksgiving and Christmas, received daily cigarette rations, and could pool their beer coupons for group drinking sessions. Black American soldiers noted the cruel irony that German prisoners could eat at restaurants Jim Crow laws prohibited them from entering. Unauthorized fraternization between American women and German prisoners became a persistent problem, with some camps hosting social receptions where Germans met their future wives. One German recalled weighing 128 pounds when captured but 185 pounds after two years as an American POW—"I had gotten so fat you could no longer see my eyes".
