In 2014, three 12-year-old girls in Wisconsin had a sleepover that turned deadly. Two of them, Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, believed the fictional internet character Slender Man was real.
They thought sacrificing their friend, Payton Leutner, would prove their loyalty to him and protect themselves and their families. They stabbed her 19 times and left her in the woods… but miraculously, Payton survived.
Both Morgan and Anissa were arrested, and psychological reports later revealed severe mental illness, including early-onset schizophrenia for Morgan.
All of this happened because of an online myth — showing the dark power of internet stories on young minds.
