If you've never seen a $3,200 Wartime penny up close you're in for a treat!
A visual lesson on identifying altered (electroplated to look "new") steel cents. Also a dramatic look at various steel cent grades.

Since coin shows are not happening for nearly all of us right now I figured I would try and show you something special, a visual lesson on 1943 Steel Wheat Cents.

Just an FYI - I'm not trying to sound snobby about the coins showing in those rolls, I'm sure there are some fun and nice coins in there! I am only trying to make a point about comparing my guessed grades of authentic unaltered steel wheat cents.

About the roll with mostly plated steelies inside? I let the seller know, and they refunded me in full AND told me to keep the pennies. In this case I actually had no reason not to believe the seller, especially since most of what they were selling actually was was something like figurines and pottery not coins. They were also quite apologetic. I make no assumptions about these things. There are plenty of sellers making NO false claims and simply re-selling what they got at estate sales, thrifting, etc...those are some of sellers where can also end up getting fantastic deals on things like unsearched coin rolls, where "unsearched" or not just doesn't matter for the price :-)

I didn't talk about the edges of the plated steel pennies but you can see in the video that the plated ones tend to have a completely chrome looking edge because the entire coin has been plated, including the edge.
I neglected to show the edge of a loose unaltered steel cent but the edge tends to look just like the gun metal type steel I described although they can be shiny and chrome like. Since the original steel cents did not receive a zinc plating on the edges.

Also the plated steel cents are still magnetic of course just like the original ones.
