In 1902, a wildfire fueled by logging debris burned 239,000 acres and killed 38 people — and nobody came to fight it. Before chainsaws, men stood on wooden planks jammed into trees 300 feet tall and spent two days cutting through a single trunk with a hand saw. They climbed spar trees 200 feet high with nothing but boot spurs and a rope. The loggers called the dead branches above them "widow makers." They earned the name. This is the forgotten story of how the Pacific Northwest was logged by hand.
