The SMBJXXA series feature large cross-sectional area junctions to effectively conduct high transient currents, with a 600 watt peak power dissipation rating for a 10 by 1000 microsecond surge waveform and peak pulse current handling up to 65.3 amps. They also have a 30 kilovolt ESD withstand voltage and can handle 40 amp EFT events.
They unidirectional diodes are available with operating voltages from 5 to 170 volts, offer a nearly instant response time, don’t degrade, and have low clamping voltage to ensure effective protection of downstream components over the life of the device.
The SMBJXXA series are offered in a DO-214AA, or SMB, surface mount package. With a 5.59 by 3.94 millimeter footprint and 2.5 millimeter height, the compact package is suitable for board level protection of a single data or power line.
Electronics that operate in harsh transient environments need to be protected against surge, ESD, and EFT to ensure they operate reliably, but each of these transients exhibits different electrical characteristics.
Surge immunity testing for TVS diodes uses a 10 by 1000 microsecond waveform defined in IEC 61643-123, where 10 microseconds is the rise time of the surge current and 1000 microseconds is the time it takes to decay to 50 percent of the peak. This is where the SMBJXXA series excels with it 600 watt peak power dissipation and high peak pulse current handling.
The ESD and EFT waveforms, as defined by IEC 61000-4-2 and -4 respectively, are both much faster but lower energy. However, the SMBJXXA achieves 30 kilovolt ESD withstand, exceeding the standard’s highest level of 15 kilovolts. It’s also able to handle the level 3, 40 amp EFT levels, providing robust protection against all kinds of overvoltage stresses.
Semtech SMBJXXA ESD diodes offer rugged performance in a compact package, with the fast response time and low clamping voltages to ensure sensitive electronics are protected against electrical overstresses, and they’re especially suitable for industrial equipment, datacom, and telecom applications that face potentially high current lightning surges.
