LYRICS
OH MOTHER! (AFRICA)
by Charlotte Haesen
It’s been a while since I’ve been around, I know
I know it’s time to lay down the burden of the unknown
Oh Mother! Why do I cry
Oh Mother! Why do I hide
Oh Mother! Why am I functional and broken at the same time
You stay silent, are you teaching me how to listen
Africa Africa
The sun goes down behind the clouds, I know
I know it’s time to lay down the burden of the unknown
Oh Mother! Why do I cry
Oh Mother! Why do I hide
Oh Mother! Why am I functional and broken at the same time
You stay silent, are you teaching me how to listen
Africa (Oh Mother!) Africa (Oh Mother!)
It’s a small world, when the sun goes down, there’s a pile of paper, a secret window
It’s a small world, when the sun goes down, there’s a pile of paper, a secret window
You stay silent, are you teaching me how to listen?
Are you teaching me how to listen?
Are you teaching me how to listen?
Oh Mother! Why do I cry 2x Oh Mother! Why do I hide
Oh Mother! Why am I functional and broken at the same time
Africa Africa

EXPLANATION
Oh Mother!” reflects my personal journey of questioning, longing for self-discovery, and grappling with complex emotions around rejection and identity. The lyrics are deeply tied to the African and ‘unknown’ parts of my heritage, Burundian and Rwandan. The African culture of my ancestors always felt more distant and ‘unknown’ yet I carry their heavy trauma and pain everyday.
Vibe:
The vibe of “Oh Mother!” is nostalgic, mysterious, and layered with dark humor. It’s not a fearful darkness but one rooted in culture, filled with African and tribal elements. The song carries a sense of emotional duality: questioning and vulnerability juxtaposed with strength and cultural pride. Musically, it blends tribal beats with a modern, introspective sound.
Cover Artwork:
The artwork for “Oh Mother!” will reflect the themes of exploration, fear, and the search for self. The visuals include imagery of a woman standing alone in nature, possibly in silhouette, with elements of tribal art and nature—African landscapes, shadows, and other symbols of growth and struggle. The artwork should convey both fragility and strength, representing the archetypes of the explorer, magician, and rebel.
Videoclip:
The music video will feature studio scenes (@ therocketship studios in Adam Noord met Anahi Clemens en Levi Hen) reflecting themes of duality—mother and daughter, strength versus fragility, isolation versus connection. The African elements will be highlighted through projections on the body, tribal symbolism, and nature. Close-up shots of facial expressions and body movements will convey the internal struggle of understanding oneself and one’s heritage. The clip will also include symbolic props like mirrors, drums, and clocks, representing time and introspection.
Creatieve proces:
The birth of “Oh Mother!” happened during a songwriting class of Becca Stevens. We were 14 songwriters and each of us wrote a free flow from which we each chose a line that we submitted. Based on these 14 lines each of us wrote a song. Mine became Oh Mother!. It exists in 14 versions by 14 very different artist from all over the world..
