Hudson was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a severe heart defect in which one side of the heart is malformed. Thirty years ago children born with this condition didn't survive. Because of medical innovations, they're now able to have a series of three surgeries to re-route circulation (Fontan circulation) and make survival possible.
Hudson had three major surgeries before he was 2. Then, he went into heart failure. Transplant was the only option. While waiting for a new heart, Hudson began to suffer strokes.
He and his mom moved into Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where they lived for 6 months.
Almost two years after he was listed for heart transplant, Hudson's parents got the call: a heart was available. Pediatric cardiac surgeons at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia completed the transplant.
Today Hudson is in kindergarten.
