UNIDROIT 2026 Internship in Rome Legal Research Internship for Law Students (Paid & Fully In-Person)
Are you a law student or recent graduate looking to work at the heart of international legal development? The UNIDROIT 2026 Internship Programme is your chance to gain hands-on legal experience at a leading intergovernmental organization based in Rome, Italy. This highly respected internship gives you the opportunity to contribute to global legal reforms while working with expert legal officers on real-world international law projects.
UNIDROIT—the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law—focuses on harmonizing private and commercial law across borders. Interns assist in legal research, drafting concept notes and reports, translating legal texts, and supporting the development of legal instruments that impact trade, agriculture, finance, digital assets, and sustainability around the world.
This 3-month in-person internship is open to upper-year undergraduate and postgraduate law students with strong academic backgrounds. Applicants must have professional-level fluency in English and/or French. Priority is given to candidates from developing countries, and five internship slots are reserved for students from the Asia-Pacific region, thanks to funding from the UNIDROIT Asian Transnational Law Centre.
Although most positions are unpaid, top candidates may receive a €1,000 monthly stipend. However, living in Rome is costly, with average expenses ranging from €2,000–€3,000 per month. UNIDROIT encourages applicants to secure external funding through Erasmus+, university scholarships, or other grants. Stipend recipients can also combine it with other funding sources.
As an intern, you can work in one of several thematic areas including:
Access to Credit (e.g., Cape Town Convention, Warehouse Receipts)
International Commercial Contracts
Law & Technology (e.g., Digital Assets, Civil Liability)
Agricultural Law & Development
Capital Markets & Financial Law
Transnational Civil Procedure
Cultural Property Protection
Sustainability & Carbon Credits
