Step into London at the end of the Victorian age.
Using original photographs from The Queen’s London (1896), this film brings the city to life through careful colourisation and subtle motion, revealing how London appeared in the final years of Queen Victoria’s reign.
These scenes capture a city shaped by empire, industry, and rapid change — from the Victoria Embankment and St Paul’s Cathedral to the docks, bridges, and crowded streets that defined everyday life. New streets cut through older neighbourhoods, global trade flowed through the Thames, and institutions founded in the nineteenth century laid the foundations of modern London.
At the same time, deep contrasts remained. Wealth and power stood alongside overcrowded housing, low wages, and uncertain work for much of the population.
More than a century later, much of today’s London still rests on these Victorian foundations.
