US President Donald Trump, in a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, has invoked Japan’s attack on the US in World War Two when asked by a Japanese reporter why the US was not more forthcoming with allies before launching its war with Iran, saying, “Who knows better about surprise than Japan?”
“Why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbor, okay?” Trump said.
“You don’t want to signal too much ... when we go in, we went in very hard, and we didn’t tell anybody about it because we wanted surprise,” he said.
Trump also praised Takaichi for Japan’s support of the US during this war while criticising NATO, saying Japan is “really stepping up to the plate”.
He then added that the support is likely due to the country getting “more than 90 per cent” of its oil through the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier this week, Trump called on US allies to send ships to the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20 per cent of the world’s oil and gas is shipped.
Iran has effectively blocked the channel since the US and Israel attacked last month, sending global oil prices skyrocketing.
