The basic rhythms we’ve covered previously, whole, half, quarter, and eighth notes, are the most common types of rhythms, but there are more advanced types that you should know: 16th, 32nd and 64th notes. This is Part 18 of the How To Read Music series.
Like eighth notes, they have flags on them, but 16th notes have 2 flags, 32nd notes have 3 flags, and 64th notes have 4 flags.
16th notes are twice as fast as 8th notes, 32nd notes are twice as fast as 16th notes, and 64th notes, which are very rare, are twice as fast as 32nd notes. Of these three, 16th notes are by far the most common.
Their corresponding rests are also fairly straightforward, with 16th rests having one more dot than 8th rests, 32nd rests have one more than that, and 64th rests have one more than that.
