This is a new feature that aims to make your #security and compliance more secure and help you get more control over the internal groups in your organization. This is because sometimes you don’t want certain member types to be part of a specific group, or if you want to allow a specific whitelisted domain users to be able to join your Google Groups.

Restrict group membership is an enterprise feature in Google Workspace, and if you don’t have Google Workspace Enterprise editions, then you will not be able to find this feature…

You can restrict your group membership to only other users in your domain, or other groups only, or service accounts. You can configure a combination of restrictions as well, such as restrict the group membership to both users and groups in your domain, or users and groups from your domain another partner or whitelisted domains as well.

This is done using the editable query and using the query building which is a very intuitive way to create your own conditions and queries.
