Cooper Webb decided halfway through the Main Event that Sector Four was the place to get Ken Roczen. "It started to get difficult, that three in, and I caught that when Kenny had the lapper incident. I did it that lap and was like, 'Oh, this could be an opportunity,' because to hit it correctly, at least the left back onto the straightaway, you left the door quite open. But that's the fast way around."
"That was kind of like a road race section, you want to go out and in and really set everything up, but you had to be close enough to make it happen, or it wasn't going to happen," he explained in the press conference, seated next to the rider he bested for the victory and the rider he pulled even with in the championship standings. "Patience, seeing where you could or couldn't make a pass. I felt comfortable where I was and felt like when I needed to, I could make up some time. That was the point that I picked out."
Roczen was wise about what was happening and how every move was being watched, but he stayed with his preferred lines, the ones that put him in the lead. "It was a tough one because the turns, they were quite open. If you're out front and you have a little bit of a gap, you want to sweep them as good as you can to carry momentum, but when you have somebody really close, you're kind of gambling with that option," he summarized. "After the finish line, I went really wide on the landing and felt like I missed all the bumps, so that was really good, but if I protect the inside and he's right behind me, he sees that I'm going right there. Sometimes it's better to be in second in those situations. I gave it everything I had and didn't let anything confuse me or trip me out or anything. I hung in there."
Webb was unmatched through Sectors One/Two/Three in the laps leading up to the move and was especially effective when it mattered most on Lap 22, as he was 0.637 seconds quicker than Roczen through the lanes, had a race-best run across the end zone rhythm (5.661), and wrestled away the win with relentless pass attempts.
