U.S lawmaker Ro Khanna discussed the changing perceptions of Indians regarding the greatest military threat to their country. He highlighted that the recent border dispute with China in eastern Ladakh has led to a significant shift in Indian public opinion, with many now seeing China as a greater threat than their long-standing adversary, Pakistan.
Relations between China and India have stalled ever since the Galwan Valley clashes between the two militaries in June 2020. The following 18 rounds of Corps Commander level talks have failed to resolve all issues.
To address this, Khanna called for a constructive re-balancing with China based on four guiding principles. Firstly, an economic reset to reduce trade deficits and tensions between the two countries. Secondly, maintaining open lines of communication to prevent misunderstandings and avoid conflict. Thirdly, implementing effective military deterrence to ensure that China understands the potential consequences of its actions. Fourthly, respecting Asian partners and engaging with the world in a robust manner.
Furthermore, Khanna emphasized the importance of building alliances with India and other Asian countries to counter China's growing regional influence. He noted that the QUAD, consisting of the US, India, Australia, and Japan, is a critical element of this strategy.
The region's strategic importance lies in the disputed territories in the South China Sea and the East China Sea. China claims sovereignty over these areas, which are also claimed by Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei, and Taiwan. These territories are vital to global trade and are said to contain significant natural resources.
