The Albany Historic Carousel & Museum is located in the heart of downtown Albany, a place designed for the young, and the young at heart. Back-in angle parking is available beside the building, with ample street parking nearby on 2nd Avenue and Calapooia Street and in the public lot at 2nd Avenue and Ferry Street.
Wide double doors with push-button entry lead into a bright, welcoming space with plenty of room for mobility devices. As you enter, the cheerful sound of a vintage band organ fills the air setting the stage for the magic inside.
At the center of the room, the carousel filled with a colorful menagerie of hand-carved animals spins beneath twinkling lights. There are horses along with a whimsical mix of real and imaginary animals, each one with its own personality and flair. The ride also includes two chariots and a secure locking mechanism that allows wheelchair users to roll on and ride without transferring.
Past the carousel, the gift shop is staffed by friendly volunteers and offers a variety of fun finds for all ages. In addition to carousel-themed souvenirs, the shelves are filled with stuffed animals, dress-up clothes, books, games, and unique gifts perfect for birthdays or special surprises.
Just beyond the gift shop, a viewing window reveals the painting room, where new animals are lovingly brought to life, like Lady Sophia, a graceful white standard poodle posed with elegance and pride.
The entire building is ADA accessible including the restrooms, and the lower level is accessible by elevator. At the base of the elevator, visitors will find the museum gallery, where antique carousel animals donated by the Dentzel family stand proudly behind a velvet rope. Interpretive panels tell the story of the Dentzel legacy.
To the right of the gallery, the carving room offers a peek at the figures currently in progress. Blocks of wood are slowly transformed into expressive new creatures. Highlights include Bucky, a poised white-tailed deer, and Friend, a fierce-looking Chinese Foo Dog with wide eyes and a toothy grin.
Back upstairs, the Carnival Café adds a tasty twist to the visit. Guests can enjoy freshly popped popcorn, Umpqua ice cream, Icees, hot dogs, and other nostalgic treats. Look for specials like Float Friday, when guests receive $1 off ice cream floats.
Two party rooms are available to rent, and both are fully accessible and include tables, chairs, and a counter with a sink for easy snack setup. One room accommodates up to 47 guests, and the other up to 39.
