Today I want to offer a word to those of us struggling with excess.
Too much of a bad thing can destroy us quickly. But too much of a good thing can be even more dangerous—because it deceives us.
In Romans 12, Paul urges us to “think and act with sober judgment.” True happiness is impossible without moderation.
Moderation is not deprivation. It is discipline. It is the work of taking our lives back from consumerism, addiction, and even from other people’s ambitions for us. The ancient word ascetic simply means to practice or to exercise. In this sense, moderation is the fasting of excess.
Extremes often feel easier. It is easier to indulge than to discern. Easier to dominate than to love. Easier to react than to remain faithful. Moderation, by contrast, takes courage.
Like Jesus of Nazareth, moderation is rooted in humility—at the margins of power and affluence. It challenges cultures of excess and invites us toward communal flourishing rather than endless accumulation.
This Lent, I am asking myself:
Where is excess deforming me?
What might freedom from excess look like?
Who could walk with me as a mentor on this journey?
You’re welcome to continue this journey—at your own pace.
