Walking tour of the downtown Ottawa Byward Market area on a hot late summer Wednesday night.
Disclaimer - I'm still learning how to shoot correctly in different lighting conditions and didn't see until the edited footage was exported that there's some motion blur on closeups and darker areas in this video, and lighting is a little over exposed. It was a good experience to teach me how to make it better each time going forward, but my apologies for the lower quality here.
The ByWard Market is Ottawa nightlife hotspot and a key tourist attraction during all hours. Established by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest public markets. The builder of the Rideau Canal, Lt-Col. By laid out the street plan of the Market, designating the streets to be extra wide to accommodate horse-drawn carriages bringing in goods every day.
This area averages 50,000 visitors per weekend in the summer months. It is home to both a local farmers' market and artisans, as well as over 600 independent businesses. Unfortunately homelessness and drug addiction are major challenges in the ByWard Market, with many who visit and work here voicing concerns that those realities have taken a toll on the sightseeing and businesses here.
