When tonsillitis first appears, many people try home remedies - gargling, drinking plenty of fluids, and using throat sprays or painkillers for temporary relief. These can help ease discomfort, but if symptoms worsen or don’t improve, it’s time to see an ENT specialist.
If the infection is mild or moderate and you can still eat or drink, treatment usually includes oral antibiotics, pain relief, and throat sprays. But if the symptoms are severe - such as high fever, severe throat pain, or dehydration - you may need to be admitted for intravenous (IV) antibiotics, IV fluids, and close monitoring, especially in children.
For recurrent tonsillitis, more than three or four episodes a year, surgery may be required. According to national ENT guidelines, a tonsillectomy is recommended to remove the tonsils completely. Once removed, they do not grow back, although occasional sore throats can still occur.
