Karnaphuli tunnel is known by different names. These names are Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, Bangabandhu Tunnel, Bangabandhu Surang.
But the real name of Karnaphuli tunnel is Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman tunnel. This tunnel is built at a depth of 150 feet in Kornaphuli river. The tunnel connects the two banks of Karnaphuli river. This tunnel is the first and longest under-river road tunnel in Bangladesh and South Asia.
Dhaka-Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway will be connected through this tunnel. The length of Bangabandhu Tunnel is 3.43 km. It is the first tunnel in Bangladesh and the first and longest under-river road tunnel in South Asia.
The Chinese company China Communication and Construction Company Limited (CCCC) is implementing this tunnel construction project. This tunnel started from the side of the Naval Academy in Chittagong suburbs and reached the southern end of the river through the middle of the Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited and Karnaphuli Fertilizer Limited factories on the south bank of the river. Karnaphuli tunnel is located in the middle of Karnaphuli river at a depth of 150 feet.
On October 14, 2016, Bangladesh Prime Minister and Chinese President Xi Jinping laid the foundation stone of the project. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina officially inaugurated the construction of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel on February 24, 2019.
The construction of the tunnel will cost 9 thousand 880 crores. When Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Dhaka in October 2016, a loan agreement was signed for the construction of the Karnaphuli tunnel. According to the agreement, Exim Bank of China is giving Tk 5 thousand 913 crore as a 20-year loan. The rest is financed by the Bangladesh government. Exim Bank's financing interest rate is 2 percent

Project officials said that about 6.3 million vehicles will travel through the tunnel annually. After three years of operation, that number will stand at 76 lakh. In the first year of operation, about 51 percent of the vehicles in operation will be container trailers and various types of trucks and vans. The remaining 49 percent will have 1.3 lakh buses, minibuses and microbuses and 1.2 lakh cars, jeeps and various small vehicles.
